Statement of Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS, concerning Chicago hospital shooting

Statement of Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS, concerning Chicago hospital shooting

My prayers today are with the three people shot and killed in a tragic shooting yesterday at Mercy Hospital in Chicago. A police officer and father of three, a young emergency room physician, and a pharmacy resident who was a recent college graduate lost their lives in an irrational act of homicide; an incomprehensible display of cruelty which has become, tragically, an all too common occurrence in my former home. In addition to the families of these victims, I have in my thoughts the Sisters of Mercy, founders of the hospital. That religious community has compassionately ministered to low-income patients for decades; they have always been attentive to the needs of the poor. May Mary, Our Mother of Mercy, embrace all who are sorrowful and suffering, such as the hospital staff and the Chicago Police Department, in her mantle of love and maternal care.
