OLLU hosts solar eclipse viewing

Students, staff, faculty and families from the local community gathered in Our Lady of the Lake University’s (OLLU) St. Anthony Courtyard at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 21, to view the partial solar eclipse. The science and math faculty at OLLU hosted the event, providing solar eclipse goggles, a telescope with solar viewing filter and more information about the eclipse. San Antonio is not in the ‘path of totality’ (that area of the country viewing a full eclipse), so viewers saw approximately 61 percent coverage of the sun during this eclipse. However, according to Dr. Charles Smith, professor of chemistry at OLLU and eclipse-viewing organizer, “On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will travel right over OLLU….So I look at the partial eclipse as an excellent practice event for what is to come.”
